more Mucha lovefest
I hear (well read on the internet) that Mucha and Gauguin were pals? uh. the only way that could get more awesome is if Van Gogh wrote Mucha some Very Earnest Letters.(that reminds me that I need to read that book of Van Gogh’s letters…)
anyways.
so, I’m looking for a full version of what this is from. I know it’s a watercolor by mucha:
will probably be searching in the school library for pictures by him anyway. it’s for a secret project. kind of.
anyway, now I am looking at more delicius mucha art on google images, so here is one of my favorites. it’s the colors:
I also found the work of Zinaida Serebriakova recently. Admittedly, I pretty much just googled her and went “ooh, pretty” so I can’t like, geek out and tell you much about her. But her stuff is really amazing. I thought she must have been more or less contemporary from her self portrait:
but she was working in around the 1900s.
gonna try to look her up some more when I have the time. Along with a bunch of other artists whose work I’ve saved onto my desktop. more substantial posts soon, I promise. and art and Comic info. yes!
but now I need to go pack. ugh.

in which Megan is panicking about making comics
ok, you know what? putting this under one of those cuts. it’s ridiculously long, and if you aren’t interested in my floundering, the only redeeming quality is this link to a Chris Ware Q&A.
anyway, for lots of Megan Being Confused And Not Making Sense click:

it’s kind of a “Throner”
I’ve been reading more and more superhero stuff. And lately stuff by DC when formerly I was mainly a marvel girl if I read mainstream western comics at all.
So: I really like Teen Titans Year One. The art is really pretty. Like, I really, really like the style, though once or twice (wondergirl with literal floods of tears) went weirdly into manga-esque places (which I thought was strange, since it looks so western to me? whatever, I think my sense of manga-influenced art is all out of whack after reading almost exclusively manga for years before any American stuff) but generally has this really great, consistent quality that I can’t explain why I like exactly.
Also, the writing makes me laugh. More on that forthcoming. I’m a sucker for beginning stories, it seems like, and I don’t know anything about who the teen titans are, so this was a good intro.
Basically, Batman is a jerk the entire time. Like, I felt really, really bad for poor robin.
but Alfred? he is the best dad ever:
Comes to robin’s stakeout of angst with a bag lunch. He even put a little “R” on there and everything.
so prepare for a picture spam (of photos of the comic, since I am too lazy to scan, but feel the need to share) after the jump, if this works. spoilers, probably. but it’s good so you should read the thing anyway: (more…)

halfway through flight volume 5:
the only stories I really, really loved so far were the new “treehead and igloohead” story and the malinky robot karakuri(?) story.
the beisbol one was pretty cute too, but not my favorite.
am I too hard to please now? I find myself uninterested in most of the stories so far. some I was put off by art or boring/uninteresting story (how is this possible considering the fantastical plots? I can’t say) and (weirdly) the way the words were written by hand or something.
this would all be less distressing if I actually had something to SHOW for my snobbishness. I want to do something amazing.
(More than once.)

I am laughing
I found Kate Beaton’s site a little while ago, and how much do I love her comics? especially the history ones? Garfields? Cookie-eating Napoleon? it’s awesome.
so go here and read the “history project” first. then the rest.
coming back home from Canada tomorrow. yay 12 hour train ride. augh.
on the other hand I am SO excited to go draw things when I get back. (of course, in that case I should draw NOW, you know? but it’s enough to be excited for now). I saw these GREAT chinese wall paintings at the R.O.M. and aaaaah. so good. and dinosaurs and prints and….eeeeek! so I hope to draw a lot.
and Kate Beaton’s comics make me want to draw about Darwin (there was an exhibit about him at the museum) he was hilarious. well. sweet too. but hilarious. especially the whole HMS Beagle trip.

My new favorite Pokemon
After getting sucked into the bulbapedia a while ago, I discovered what is undeniably the best pokemon ever.
come on! It’s the bastard lovechild of:
one of those deeply disturbing angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion:
and some kind of Hayao Miyazaki monster/robot:
plus probably a miyazaki FOREST.
and maybe also a dash of a hollow from bleach:
also apparently it’s the king of the golems. Badass.
I kind of want to buy the game it’s in (uh, which one is it in again?) so I can you know, actually fight with it. But there are too many reasons I shouldn’t. so for now, I will enjoy Regigas from afar. Or watch the movie it’s in. But this is also doubtful. Sorry, Regigas!
(who am I kidding? the LOL-factor alone may compel me to watch that movie)
